Without question the #1 New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight. Yet, most people who enter the new year with the hope of shedding a few pounds, fall short.
What can you do to be successful? Here are some thoughts from experts on weight loss or staying on track for whatever your goal may be- maybe it’s to learn a new hobby or visit a new place:
1. Be specific about your goal.
Saying that you want to lose weight is way too general. Instead, set specific goals, such as: “I want to lose 20 pounds” or “I want to learn how to crochet a pot holder.”
2. Set a realistic goal.
Make sure you set something that is achievable and sustainable. Don’t bite off more than you can chew, or you’ll get frustrated and, as is the case with most people, will give up. Give yourself time and really think about how much time you can dedicate to the new task.
3. Establish a plan to reach your goal.
You won’t reach your goal through wishful thinking. Put together a plan, such as “I’m going to exercise 30 minutes four times a week, and I’m going to stop eating after 8 p.m.” Then stick to that. Make it a habit before changing it up once again.
4. Set a specific time frame to reach your goal.
Thirty days is a manageable goal to start with, and then go from there.
Most people will have slip ups along the way. Don’t use them as an excuse to give up. The key to successful goals is making changes in your habits that you can maintain for the rest of your life.
