Skin Care For Seniors

The windy, frigid winter weather can be unbearable at times, especially if you leave your skin exposed. It’s important to protect your skin in both hot and cold weather, but particularly in winter, the cold winds can quickly take away your skin’s natural moisture. That dehydration leaves your skin dry and cracked, which in some cases can lead to infection. Check out these tips on skin care for seniors.

To combat the cold, make sure you’re doing the following this winter.

  • Stay moisturized. Use lotion after you get out of the shower, and cover the moisturized skin quickly with clothing to allow for maximum absorption.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink a lot of water to combat the dehydration and replace the moisture you are losing from your skin exposure.
  • Stay bundled up. Dress in layers and make sure you are adequately dressed against the cold, with your head, neck, and hands covered.

As we age our skin becomes thinner and drier, which makes us prone to winter dryness and cracking. Heavier creams and lotions may need to be used in the winter months.

If you have skin concerns or questions, reach out to your family physician. Skin care for seniors is very important.
