Keep your seniors warm, safe, and comfortable throughout the cold weather

It’s that time of year where it seems to be cold and dark all of the time. And while the snow can be beautiful, it’s easier to feel socially isolated and depressed in the winter months due to the inclement weather and early darkness. For loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s, it can also be a dangerous time of year if you don’t take steps to prepare for the weather blues.

Special action may need to be taken to ensure that your loved one is adequately prepared to handle the cold weather.

  • Make sure they are wearing enough layers, and their skin is adequately covered when they go outside. This includes gloves, hat, and a scarf.
  • Keep sidewalks and driveways around their place of residence clear of snow and ice to help reduce the likelihood of slips and falls.
  • Be extra vigilant of their movements to help prevent wandering, it could be dangerous in freezing weather.
  • Maintain a routine. Having structured day to day activities can help distract them from the dreary weather.
  • Organize something new for them to learn, such as painting, writing, cooking, or crafting.

With some necessary precautions and preparations you can be warm, safe and comfortable this winter.
